    Description / Scope of Service
    The Burn Center is a six bed critical care and eight bed intermediate critical care inpatient unit. The goals of the center are to provide high quality care to all ages and acuities and return the injured back to a healthy state. The primary mission of our center is to meet the needs of the region by providing an unequaled level of care in the treatment off all facets of burn injury through research and education. This is accomplished through a multidisciplinary effort that endeavors to consider all aspects of a person’s life, including his or her physical, social, spiritual and psychological well-being. The ideal candidate must be able to make the education of patients and families a top priority and coordinate the necessary patient are with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
    Admission criteriato the Burn Center is determined by, but not limited to, the following guidelines of all ages and acuities:

    • Thermal, electrical, chemical and/or inhalation burn injuries
    • Necrotizing soft tissue injuries
    • Stevens-Johnsons/TENS
    • Snake/Spider bites
    • Complicated wounds
    • Rare skin disorders
    A comprehensive team approach to recovery is utilized in the Burn Center. Patient care providers will include Registered Nurses, Licensed Vocational Nurses, Nurse Assistants/Patient Care Assistants, Burn Technicians, Advanced Practice Providers, Respiratory Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Pharmacists, Social Services, Case Managers, Nursing Support Services and most importantly the patient’s support system.

    Individualized Unit Specific Orientation
    • Unit specific orientation is provided in addition to UMC’s Hospital and Nursing Orientation.
    • During clinical orientation you will be paired with an experienced nurse preceptor.  Our nursing preceptors are specially trained and work as a team to obtain the best experience for the new employee
    • Orientation length is individually based and will be determined by the Preceptor, Employee and Clinical Instructor
    • Committee involvement is encouraged in order to improve patient care and processes
    • Unit specific orientation includes burn specific educational classes along with other advanced classes and/or trainings offered throughout employment including, but not limited to, the following:
      • Continuous renal replacement therapy
      • Roving in-services
      • American Burn Life Support
      • Fundamentals of Critical Care Support
      • Advanced Trauma Course for Nursing
      • Trauma Nursing Core Course
      • Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course
    • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing
    • Valid Texas Nursing License or Compact Licensure  / Graduate Nurse Permit Required
    • Knows clinical and nursing standards and practices in according with the nursing scope and standards of practice as set forth by the American Nurses Association.
    • Provides professional nursing care to patients and provides supervision and guidance to the members of the nursing staff.
    • Age specific knowledge is required when needed for appropriate patient care.
    • Has working knowledge of organizational and nursing policies.
    • Requires adequate hand/eye coordination and fine motor skills.
    • Talking and hearing is essential for communication.
    • Visual acuity is required to work with patients for observation, assessment, and electronic charting.
    • Current CPR certification from American Heart Association
    • ACLS may be required based upon area of practice.
    • Customer service abilities including effective listening skills
    • Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment
    • Ability to perform work that requires walking, sitting and standing most of the time while on duty. Occasional lifting or patients with assistance is required.
