    Status:                                    Full Time
    Hours per Pay-period:          72 (12-Hour Shift Department) per two weeks
                                                    12 hour shifts are 36 hours per week

    Description / Scope of Service
    1. Cardiac Outpatient Department has identified its scope of care to include pre-conscious sedation and post-conscious sedation care; specifically:  1.)  Prepare the patient for procedures by assessing and evaluating  his/her physical status via nursing assessment, 2.)  Provide pre-procedure and post-procedure teaching/education, 3.)  Assist the patient in returning to a safe physiological level after local, or local with conscious sedation, regional anesthesia, 4.)  Prepare the patient for discharge home.
    2. Patient population includes adolescent and adult and geriatric patients.
    3. The Perianesthesia Nursing Standards provide the guidelines for pre- and post-anesthesia care and the American Heart Association guidelines for outpatient cardiac catheterization.  Cardiac Outpatient Department is open Monday through Friday from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM and is closed on holidays and weekends
    4. Outpatient Surgery consist of 12 private patient rooms with bedside oxygen and suction outlets, these rooms have bedside cardiac monitors, two patient bathrooms, and telephone access in a central location in the unit.  There is a lab station.  Patient assignment is based on level of pre-procedure preparation requirements.
    5. The Department of Cardiology provides medical coverage and direction with full time attending and resident physician staff.
    6. Therapies include pre-procedure preparation specific to the individual patient, diagnosis, and operative/interventional procedure; post-procedure observation, assessment and evaluation of hemodynamic stability via cardiac monitoring, V/S monitoring, administration of oxygen and pulse oximetry; written discharge instructions for home care and follow-up care.
    7. Anesthetic agents are not administered in the Cardiac Outpatient Department.

    Other services provided for the unit include, but are not limited to the following:
    1.         Respiratory care by certified and/or licensed respiratory therapist.
    2.         Laboratory services for routine and stat testing.
    3.         Pharmacy services by licensed pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
    4.         Radiology services for routine and stat radiographs
    5.         Nutritional services by registered dieticians who provide consultative services for patients with special dietary restrictions.
    6.         Social Services consultations provided by qualified health care workers.
    7.         Financial counseling provided by the personnel in the Financial Counseling office.
    8.         Physical Therapy services provided by the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department.
    Patient/Customer Population
    Patient populations include outpatients, inpatients, and emergency patients from adolescent through geriatric and are treated in a manner required by the patient’s condition with appropriate staff, space, equipment and supplies.

    Individualized Unit Specific Orientation

    • Unit specific orientation is provided in addition to UMC’s Hospital and Nursing Orientation.
    • During clinical orientation you will be paired with an experienced nurse preceptor.  Our nursing preceptors are specially trained and work as a team to obtain the best experience for the new employee
    • Orientation length is individually based and will be determined by the Preceptor, Employee and Clinical Instructor
    • You will also have many opportunities for professional growth and advancement
    • Committee involvement is encouraged in order to improve patient care and processes Committees are available at unit level as well as hospital wide
    • Other opportunities include: mentoring and the ability to self-schedule to meet individual needs


    • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing
    • Valid Texas Nursing License or Compact Licensure
    • Knows clinical and nursing standards and practices in according with the nursing scope and standards of practice as set forth by the American Nurses Association.
    • Provides professional nursing care to patients and provides supervision and guidance to the members of the nursing staff.
    • Age specific knowledge is required when needed for appropriate patient care.
    • Has working knowledge of organizational and nursing policies.
    • Requires adequate hand/eye coordination and fine motor skills.
    • Talking and hearing is essential for communication.
    • Visual acuity is required to work with patients for observation, assessment, and electronic charting.
    • Current CPR certification from American Heart Association
    • ACLS may be required based upon area of practice.
    • Customer service abilities including effective listening skills
    • Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment
    • Ability to perform work that requires walking, sitting and standing most of the time while on duty. Occasional lifting or patients with assistance is required.
