Description / Scope of Service
GTU/SCU is a 29 bed Medical/Surgical unit. We have two primary focuses on the unit; one focus is on geriatric trauma patients, age 60 or older, who have sustained a trauma; these patients are primarily received from the Emergency Center and Trauma & Surgical Intensive Care Unit. The GTU was developed as a result of Best Practice and Research that indicates that a shorter length of stay decreases morbidity and mortality in the elderly hospitalized patient.  The other focus the unit provides is care for any patient with a medical and/or surgical condition that requires continuous skilled nursing care in an effort to relieve suffering and improve quality of life for patients and their families with a serious/life limiting illness or injury. GTU/SCU provides a quiet, peaceful environment for patients and their loved ones. The nursing staff on GTU/SCU are trained to care for patients at the end of life as well as those who will be discharged home or to other facilities. 
The nursing care delivery model is Primary Care Nursing. The nurse-to-patient ratio is a goal of 3-5 patients per 1 nurse. This can be adjusted by the charge nurse according to patient and staffing needs. This delivery care model dictates that the ideal candidate must be able to coordinate needed patient care with all disciplines. The ideal candidate must be able to make the education of patients and families a top priority. Floating to other units is not required.
Admission criteriato GTU/SCU is determined by, but not limited to, the following guidelines:
  • Adult patients age 18 and older
  • Orthopedic Trauma patients age 60 and older
  • Renal Failure
  • Post-op complications
  • Cardiac Disorders
  • Oncology
  • General medicine patients such as pneumonia, COPD, hypertension
  • GTU/SCU provides care for over flow patients from all other general care floors which may include but are not limited to medical, oncology, renal, postpartum, chronic pain patients, gynecology, and orthopedics. 
The below criteria requires more care than GTU/SCU can provide, these patients are not suitable for the unit:
  • Patients requiring intensive care or intensive monitoring.
  • Hemodynamically unstable patients who are a full code
  • Mechanically ventilated patients
A multi-disciplinary approach to nursing care is utilized on GTU/SCU. Patient care providers will include Registered Nurses, Licensed Vocational Nurses, Nurse Assistants/Patient Care Assistants, Respiratory Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Pharmacists, Social Services, Case Managers, and Nursing Support Services. Special training programs for Licensed staff include ELNEC. ELNEC (End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium) is a national education initiative to improve palliative care.

Individualized Unit Specific Orientation
  • Unit specific orientation is provided in addition to UMC’s Hospital Orientation.
  • During clinical orientation you will be paired with a non-licensed preceptor.  Our employees work as a team to obtain the best experience for the new employee.
  • Orientation length is individually based and will be determined by the preceptor, new employee and the department’s Clinical Instructor.
  • You will also have many opportunities for professional growth and advancement.

  • Each non-licensed job description may have additional hiring qualifications.  
  • One year of recent or previous nurse aide experience or experience equivalent to a nurse aide is required. Nurse Aide Certification is preferred.
  • Must demonstrate ability to obtain and document Vital Signs, accurate Input and Output (I&O) and report changes abnormal changes in patient status.
  • Will perform tasks which involve specified services for patients delegated by a Licensed Nurse. Functions under direction of the Registered Nurse per clinical department.
  • Age specific knowledge is required when needed for appropriate patient care.
  • Has working knowledge of organizational and nursing policies when appropriate.
  • Requires adequate hand/eye coordination and fine motor skills.
  • Talking and hearing is essential for communication.
  • Visual acuity is required to work with patients for observation, assessment, and electronic charting.
  • Current CPR certification from American Heart Association
  • Customer service abilities including effective listening skills
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment
  • Ability to perform work that requires walking, sitting and standing most of the time while on duty. Lifting and moving patients with assistance is required.
