Description:
The critical care internship gives the nurse a unique opportunity to experience a variety of Critical care units before deciding which environment is the best fit. During that time you will train in each of the four clinical areas:

Cardiac/Cardiovascular ICU: Offers a comprehensive cardiac care experience using the latest technology and treatment options. You will care for patients that are critically ill following Acute MIs, Cardiogenic Shock, post-cardiac cath lab procedures and open heart surgery among other cardiac issues.

Medical ICU: Offers the opportunity to explore a wide array of pathophysiology. The patient population includes patients with multi-system organ failure, respiratory failure, diabetic emergencies, drug overdoses, autoimmune crisis, and many other critically ill patients.

Burn Center: The Burn Center is the region’s only verified burn center. You will care for burns and other soft tissue injuries such as toxic epidermal necrolysis, necrotizing soft tissue infections, and snakebites.

Trauma and Surgical ICU: Offers a variety of opportunities for advanced patient care in the region’s only Level I Trauma Center. You will care for patients after general surgery, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, angiography, and trauma.

ORIENTATION
•UMC General Hospital Orientation
•UMC General Nursing Orientation
•Electronic Documentation training.

Individualized Unit Specific Orientation
•Unit specific orientation is in addition to UMC’s General Hospital Orientation and General Nursing Orientation
•Orientation consists of observation, classroom, and clinical hours in 4 different ICU units.
•Critical care classes are taught once a week for eleven weeks.
•During clinical orientation you will be paired with an experienced nurse preceptor. The preceptor is chosen to best fit your personality and learning style.
•After you’ve spent time in all 4 ICU units, you will match to one ICU area. Matching takes place about halfway through the internship. The remainder of your orientation will be conducted on your new home unit!
•Total orientation time is 12 weeks.
•Clinical orientation may be conducted on days or nights, depending on the shift the nurse is hired for.
•Professional growth and development opportunities are available and encouraged including: committee participation, educational, and leadership advancement. Committees are available at unit level as well as hospital wide.
•Other opportunities include: mentoring and a mix of core and flexible scheduling to optimize staffing and balance for our employees.
•After completion of orientation there will be several opportunities to serve on several specialty teams such as CRRT (continuous dialysis), Intra-aortic balloon pump, and rapid response team. There are also opportunities for specialized trauma and critical care training as well as attendance at national conferences.

Qualifications
•Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing
•Valid Texas Graduate Nurse Permit required.
•Current CPR certification from American Heart Association.
•Customer service abilities including effective listening skills.
•Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work in a fast paced environment.
•Ability to perform work that requires walking, sitting and standing most of the time while on duty. Occasional lifting or patients with assistance is required.
