Description / Scope of Service
The UMC Operating Room has 21 OR suites and provides adult and pediatric surgical care in the following specialties:
General Surgery
Orthopedics
Neurosurgery
ENT
Ophthalmology
Pediatrics
Robotic Surgery
Urology
Burn
Cardiac
Vascular
The goal of this unit is to provide high quality care for patients requiring surgical intervention. A wide range of surgical services are performed including trauma, robotics, and open heart including a state of the art Hybrid suite available for trauma, vascular and ELVAD procedures.
 
The Operating Room utilizes a multidisciplinary, team approach to patient care that includes Registered Nurses, Certified Surgical Technologists, Certified First Assists, Surgical Assistants, Registered Respiratory Therapists, Anesthesia Technicians, Porters, Anesthesiologists, CRNAs, Pharmacists, Physicians, Schedulers, Office staff and Sterile Processing staff.
 
ORIENTATION

Individualized Unit Specific Orientation
·         Unit specific orientation is provided in addition to UMC’s Hospital and Nursing Orientation.
·         During clinical orientation you will be paired with an experienced nurse preceptor.  Our nursing preceptors are specially trained and work as a team to obtain the best experience for the new employee
·         Orientation length is individually based and will be determined by the Preceptor, Employee and Clinical Instructor
·         The Registered Nurse can expect a comprehensive, six month orientation with designated experienced preceptors.
·         Clinical orientation will begin on day shift to maximize your exposure to procedures and physicians. Opportunities will be provided to work the off-shifts and in other support areas in order to gain a full understanding of the surgical services operations.
·         RNs are not initially assigned to a specialty and will rotate through all surgical services. Matching to a team will come approximately mid-way through orientation and will take into consideration orientee preferences, performance during orientation, coordinator input, department needs and positions available at the end of orientation
·         Teams are classified by color and include the following:
Blue Team – General Surgery, Plastic, and Burn
White Team – Orthopedics
Grey Team – Neurosurgery, ENT and Dental
Green Team – GYN and Ophthalmology
Red Team- Hearts and Vascular
·         Call is taken with your assigned and sister team.
·         Opportunities for professional growth and advancement, as well as continuing education offerings are provided
·         Tuition reimbursement is available for RNs returning to school to advance their degrees
 
Qualifications
·         Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing
·         Valid Texas Nursing License or Compact Licensure
·         Knows clinical and nursing standards and practices in according with the nursing scope and standards of practice as set forth by the American Nurses Association.
·         Provides professional nursing care to patients and provides supervision and guidance to the members of the nursing staff.
·         Age specific knowledge is required when needed for appropriate patient care.
·         Has working knowledge of organizational and nursing policies.
·         Requires adequate hand/eye coordination and fine motor skills.
·         Talking and hearing is essential for communication.
·         Visual acuity is required to work with patients for observation, assessment, and electronic charting.
·         Current CPR certification from American Heart Association
·         ACLS may be required based upon area of practice.
·         Customer service abilities including effective listening skills
·         Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment
·         Ability to perform work that requires walking, sitting and standing most of the time while on duty. Occasional lifting or patients with assistance is required.
