  • Description / Scope of Service
    Three West is a 33 bed in-patient orthopedic trauma /medical-surgical unit that provides care for pre and post-operative adult and trauma patients.  The Physicians primarily admitting to 3W are orthopedics, but other Physicians may admit.  The surgical specialty areas include:   general, urology, plastic, peripheral vascular, thoracic, ENT, burn, trauma, cardiovascular and neurosurgery.  3W provides care for overflow patients from all other general care floors which may include but are not limited to:  medical, oncology, renal, postpartum, chronic pain patients, and gynecology. The nurse to patient ratio is goal 
    Admission criteria
    The admitting physician or his/her designee will determine the medical indications for admission to 3 West based on, but not limited to, the following:
    • Adult patients age 18 and older
    • Any orthopedic surgeries such as: elective total joint replacements or revisions, and any orthopedic trauma related injuries
    • Post-Op complications
    • Diabetes
    • GI disorders
    • General surgical patients
    • Renal (overflow)
    • Oncology (overflow)
    • General medicine patients such as pneumonia, COPD, hypertension
    A multi-disciplinary approach to nursing care is utilized on 3W.  Patient care providers will include Registered Nurses, Licensed Vocational Nurses, Nurse Assistants/Patient Care Assistants, Respiratory Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Pharmacists, Social Services, Case Managers, and Nursing Support Services.

    Individualized Unit Specific Orientation
    • Unit specific orientation is provided in addition to UMC’s Hospital Orientation.
    • During clinical orientation you will be paired with a non-licensed preceptor.  Our employees work as a team to obtain the best experience for the new employee.
    • Orientation length is individually based and will be determined by the preceptor, new employee and the department’s Clinical Instructor.
    • The non-licensed staff member can expect rotations with physical therapy, and the Health Unit Coordinator, as well as spending 2 days with the clinical instructor to get oriented to the floor, equipment, policies and procedures. 
    •  Clinical orientation will begin on day shift to maximize your exposure to procedures and physician rounding.
    • You will also have many opportunities for professional growth and advancement.
    • Committee involvement is encouraged in order to improve patient care and processes Committees are available at unit level as well as hospital wide. 
    • Other opportunities include: mentoring and the ability to self-schedule to meet individual needs.
  • Qualifications
    • Applicant has completed Nurse Aide course and presents Nurse Aide Certification.
    • Must demonstrate ability to obtain and document Vital Signs, accurate Input and Output (I&O) and report changes abnormal changes in patient status.
    • Will perform tasks which involve specified services for patients delegated by a Licensed Nurse. Functions under direction of the Registered Nurse per clinical department.
    • Age specific knowledge is required when needed for appropriate patient care.
    • Has working knowledge of organizational and nursing policies when appropriate.
    • Requires adequate hand/eye coordination and fine motor skills.
    • Talking and hearing is essential for communication.
    • Visual acuity is required to work with patients for observation, assessment, and electronic charting.
    • Current CPR certification from American Heart Association
    • Customer service abilities including effective listening skills
    • Ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment
    • Ability to perform work that requires walking, sitting and standing most of the time while on duty. Lifting and moving patients with assistance is required.
