  • Registered Nurse Endoscopy
     Schedule: OC-PRN

    Departmental Description
  • Gastroenterology procedures include but are not limited to: Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), radiofrequency ablations, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy feeding tube placement (PEG), colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, dilatation (Maloney, Savory, pneumatic, and through the scope balloons), manometry (esophageal and anorectal),  pH studies, liver biopsy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), paracentesis,  endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF) and intragastric balloon placements.  Radiographic contrast studies are performed in the Endoscopy Center with the GI physician operating the radiological equipment.
  • Pulmonary procedures include but are not limited to:  Bronchoscopy, bronchoscopy with transbronchial biopsy, bronchial thermoplasty, rigid bronchoscopy, tracheostomy, pleurx catheter placements, pleuroscopy, thoracentesis, laryngoscopy, brachytherapy, endobronchial ultrasounds (EBUS) and electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopies (ENB).
  • Pain management procedures include, but are not limited to:nerve blocks, nerve and joint injections, radiofrequency thermocoagulation (RFTC), Lysis of adhesions (LOA), Spinal column stimulator (SCS) trial.
  • Minimally invasive cardiac procedures include Transesophogeal Echocardiogram and Cardioversions.
  • The Universal Protocol Checklist is completed before any sedation is given.  This is an oral “Time Out” between the RN, the Attending Physician, the Anesthesia Provider and any other members of the procedural team.  Under direction of the Physician, the RN will administer medications to induce moderate sedation.  Medication guidelines for the sedation of adult/pediatric patients are used for general direction.  An RN according to the moderate sedation policy will monitor the patient and document on the sedation record.  When moderate sedation is deemed inadequate or contraindicated, the physician will request anesthesia services.  An anesthesia cart is available in all 8 procedure rooms in the Endoscopy Center and will be maintained by the anesthesia department. 
  • Emergency equipment and drugs are available in the lab to meet emergency conditions.

    Responsibilities
    •             Must maintain a current CPR certification from American Heart Association
    •             Provides professional nursing care to patients and provides supervision and guidance to the members of the nursing staff.
    •             Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job.
    Qualifications
    •             Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing
    •             Valid Texas RN License/Eligible Compact License
    Orientation

    •             Orientation as determined by the hiring department
    •             Unit specific orientation
    •             Orientation length is individually based and will be determined by preceptor, employee and clinical instructor
