Departmental Description

3 East is a 35 bed general inpatient unit that provides care for adult patients ranging in age from 16 years of age to 99 years of age. Six of those are dedicated to the bariatric population. We provide pre-op and post-op nursing care for the following surgical teams: General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Urology, Cardiovascular, ENT, Trauma, Bariatric (Weight Loss Surgery), we also care for Medical Patients (Internal Medicine). We also provide nursing care as needed to an over-flow population of adult patients from all other general care units. The nursing care delivery model is Primary Care Nursing. The nurse-to-patient ratio is a goal of 4-5 patients per 1 nurse. This can be adjusted by the charge nurse according to patient and staffing needs. This delivery care model dictates that the ideal candidate must be able to coordinate needed patient care with all disciplines. The ideal candidate must be able to balance time management and prioritization, including patient/family education as a priority.

Admission criteria to 3 East is determined by, but not limited to, the following guidelines:

General Surgery- General to complex abdominal and thoracic procedures as well as patients with GI disorders such as GI bleed and pancreatitis.  Some require surgical intervention and some do not.

Neurosurgery- Procedures involving head, neck and spine.  Also some do not require surgical intervention, just observation and isolation of the C-Spine.

ENT- Procedures for the treatment of the ear nose and throat.  Some simple as a tonsillectomy or complex as cancer or trauma.

Urologic Surgery- Procedures that involve any or all of the GU system.  Also with or without surgical intervention.

Cardiovascular- Procedures that are heart/vascular in nature.

Bariatric Surgery- Weight loss surgery procedures including Gastric Sleeves and  Roux-en-y surgery.  Both involving very precise dieting before and after.  Bariatric equipment is available for use.

Trauma- These patients may suffer from one or more injuries including: head, neck, spine, chest, abdomen, and all extremities.  We only see complex orthopedic trauma patients, most other orthopedic patients go to 3-west (unless overflow).

Our patient population can include patients on one of the many type of isolation protocols.  There are two negative pressure rooms available for respiratory isolation patients: Room 317 and 318.  Any other of the rooms can be used for isolation for a resistant organism or for neutropenic precautions.  Signs are posted on the door as to what kind of isolation the patient is on and an isolation cart will be placed outside the door with available equipment required for the isolation type. The equipment may be referred to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).  It will be required for staff and visitors to wear before entering the room.

A multi-disciplinary approach to nursing care is utilized on 3 East. Patient care providers will include Registered Nurses, Licensed Vocational Nurses, Nurse Assistants/Patient Care Assistants, Respiratory Therapists, Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Pharmacists, Social Services, Case Managers, Dieticians, Clergy, Nursing Support Services, Nurse Practitioners,  Physician Assistants and finally, Physicians (MD & DO) from both private to TTHSC practice.  First year residents (interns) have obtained credential of MD but are in the 1st year of practice beyond medical school.
