Description / Scope of Service
The Performance Improvement Department is a service-oriented support department for hospital operations, which is continuously focused on improving process with quality objectives, performance indicators, audit results, analysis of data, corrective and preventive actions and leadership review. The major services provided include:
 
  • Core Measure Abstractions
  • Hospital Accreditation (regulatory preparation and review)
  • Unusual occurrence reporting and analysis
  • Performance Improvement Processes (Lean/Six Sigma, RCA, FMEA)
  • Data Analysis
  • Primary Stoke Center
  • Provider Credentialing
  • Risk Management
  • State of Texas NICU Designation
Performance improvement and patient safety initiatives focus on outcomes of care, treatment and services.  It is a coordinated and collaborative effort that involves all disciplines, including leadership, medical staff members, other professionals, non-professionals and patients working together, to effectively improve performance and safety in a systematic manner. 
 
The ideal candidate must be able to:
Primary oversight for regulatory compliance for healthcare reform programs as this relates to CMS and the State of Texas.  Identify, evaluate and assist in the implementation of performance improvement opportunities based on data collected and submitted as part of healthcare reform.  Seeks research based practices that are associated with optimal patients outcomes. Introduce best practice to all clinical staff based on literature, internal and external data as well as benchmark information to influence the adoption of new practices.  Plans, directs and coordinates PI abstractors, Data Analysts, Committee Coordinator and the policy and procedure system utilized house-wide. 
 
Using strong quantitative skills and disciplined task management capabilities with high levels of interpersonal skills and diplomacy, functions effectively within an ambiguous environment.  Able to work independently, self-regulate projects, set goals and follow through, effectively documenting progress.  Well organized with the ability to handle various tasks simultaneously including the ability to prioritize, plan and execute without close supervision.  Reports to the Vice President of Quality.
 
 
ORIENTATION

  • Orientation has determined by the hiring department
Individualized Unit Specific Orientation
  • Unit specific orientation is provided in addition to UMC’s Hospital
  • Job specific duties are documented through the orientation period
  • Orientation length is individually based and will be determined by Director
  • Orientation may include training in CERNER, QNET, Premier and EPSI applications (webinars, online tutorials, and possible travel if applicable).
  • Additional job-specific training may be provided in the form of course attendance / participation (online, on-site and/or off-site). 
 
Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing, and current license from the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners. 
  • Bachelors degree in Nursing required, Master’s degree in Nursing preferred
  • Two (2) years of experience to include one (1) year of supervisory experience in an Emergency and/or Trauma setting; or, Diploma or Associates degree plus four (4) years of progressive professional nursing experience in a specialty area. 
  • Within 1 year of employment must obtain TNCC, ATCN, and ABLS.  Instructor status preferred.  Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN) preferred. 
  • Knows clinical and nursing standards and practices in according with the nursing scope and standards of practice as set forth by the American Nurses Association
  • Has working knowledge of organizational and nursing policies
  • Requires adequate hand/eye coordination and fine motor skills
  • Talking and hearing is essential for communication
  • Must exhibit good judgment and problem solving
  • Letter writing skills required
  • Must be current in medical knowledge
  • Visual acuity is required to work with patients for observation, assessment, and electronic charting.
  • Current CPR certification from American Heart Association/ May or may not be required based upon level of patient contact
  • ACLS may be required based upon area of practice
  • Customer service abilities including effective listening skills
  • Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment
  • Ability to perform work that requires walking, sitting and standing most of the time while on duty. Occasional lifting with assistance is required
  • All employees must review, sign and utilize UMC’s Standards of Excellence
  • Master’s Degree (MSN, MSHA, MPH etc.) required. 
  • At least eight years clinical experience in acute hospital setting with experience in Quality or Risk Management preferred. 
  • Previous leadership / supervisory experience (example participation in multidisciplinary committees, leading committees, teams etc.) as well as computer skills, research and basic statistical analysis is required.
  • CPHQ certification in one year if not already obtained
