  • PART I - General Job / Performance Information
  • Education and Experience
    • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing. Three years of professional nursing experience. Bachelor's of Science degree in Nursing is required with a minimum of 3 years experience in the specific clinical area. Supervisory experience desired.
  • Environmental / Working Conditions
    • Works in a well-lighted, heated and ventilated building. Hours may vary to accommodate needs in the department as prescribed by the philosophy of the hospital. Exposure to blood born pathogens is high risk.
  • Interaction with Other Departments and Other Relationships
    • This position must interact closely with the medical staff and other ancillary areas in order to facilitate a quality multi-disciplinary approach to patient care.

  • Job Description
    • The Clinical Instructor:
      • Works in cooperation with nursing staff, physicians, and members of related health services to create a learning environment in which nursing and other staff can develop knowledge and skills toward our goal to provide optimal, achievable patient care.
      • Serves as a role model, resource person and educator.
      • Functions within the framework of established philosophies and objectives of University Medical Center and Nursing Service.
  • Required Licensures / Certifications / Registrations
    • Current R.N. licensure from Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners.
  • Physical Capabilities
    • Work is of medium demand; walking, sitting and standing most of the time while on duty. Occasional lifting of patients with assistance is required. Adequate hand/eye coordination and fine motor skills required. Talking and hearing is essential in instructing and supervising of nursing personnel and in receiving doctor's orders and patient's condition reports. Near visual acuity is required to work with charts and records and to observe patients.
  • Skills and Abilities
    • Age specific knowledge is required when needed for appropriate patient care. Must be able to employ adult learning strategies in relation to educational activities. All Clinical Instructors are responsible to provide BLS. BLS instructor status is highly recommended, but may be delegated to other nursing staff in the unit. Instructor status is required in at least one of the following areas: NRP, PALS, ACLS to correlate with staff nurse requirements in each unit.
