  • Description / Scope of Service
    Patient Population Served
    The SWCC Outpatient Clinic and Infusion Center provide care to adult and pediatric patients with non-cancerous, hematology and/or oncology conditions.
    Scope of Service
    1. Chemotherapy administration and practices are followed using ONS guidelines and institutional policies and procedures.  Protocol participation is also available. Therapies include but are not limited to: chemotherapy via ambulatory infusion pump, intravenous, intrathecal, IM or SQ route, therapeutic phlebotomy, administration of blood and blood products, anti-emetic therapy, IV immunotherapy and IV hydration.
    2. Patient chemotherapy education is provided by an RN regarding the disease process, chemotherapy drugs, side effects, procedures, protocols, and complications resulting from disease and treatment.  Videos, handouts and one-on-one teaching methods are utilized. 
    3. Outpatient procedures include but are not limited to physical examinations, cancer screenings, apheresis, bone marrow biopsies, breast biopsies, fine needle aspirations colposcopies, lumbar punctures, mammosite balloon placement, exchange transfusions, dressing changes and insertion of central and/or PICC lines.
    4. Patient referral services are provided to each patient based on their needs.
    Employee Skill Mix:
    The SWCC infusion and clinic staff presently consist of a Nurse Director, Assistant Nurse Director/Clinical Instructor, Director of Psychosocial Services, Patient Navigation Manager, Lung Navigator, Social Worker, Telephone Triage Nurse, Infusion Charge Nurse, 20 Registered Nurses practicing with a current Texas License, 3.5 patient care assistants, 2 phlebotomists, and 5 HUC/Schedulers working directly under the SWCC Administrator.
    1. The clinic staff include a primary nurse (0800-1700 M-F) for each clinic physician.  Part –time RNs, float RNs, SWCC PRN RNs and PCAs provide additional coverage as needed.
    2. The infusion staff have a charge nurse (0800-1700 M-F) to make assignments and assist with the general flow of the department.  Staggered shifts of 0800-1630, 0800-1800, 0830-1700, and 0900-1730 are set for full-time and part-time staff to allow for full coverage during operating hours.  UMC’s resource pool, SWCC PRN RNs and PCAs provide additional coverage as needed.  
    3. Medical staff includes hematological and medical oncologists, a breast surgeon, a gynecologic oncology surgeon, general surgeons, pulmonologists, a physician assistant, a nurse practitioner and other appropriately credentialed providers.

    • Unit specific orientation is provided in addition to UMC’s Hospital Orientation.
    • During clinical orientation you will be paired with a non-licensed preceptor.  Our employees work as a team to obtain the best experience for the new employee.
    • Orientation length is individually based and will be determined by the preceptor, new employee and the department’s Clinical Instructor.
    • The orientee can expect rotations in clinic and infusion during the orientation period.
    • Clinical orientation is approximately 2-3 weeks and monitored by the clinical instructor
    • You will also have many opportunities for professional growth and advancement.
    • Committee involvement is encouraged in order to improve patient care and processes Committees are available at unit level as well as hospital wide. 
    • Applicant has completed Nurse Aide course and presents Nurse Aide Certification.
    • Must demonstrate ability to obtain and document Vital Signs, accurate Input and Output (I&O) and report changes abnormal changes in patient status.
    • Will perform tasks which involve specified services for patients delegated by a Licensed Nurse. Functions under direction of the Registered Nurse per clinical department.
    • Age specific knowledge is required when needed for appropriate patient care.
    • Has working knowledge of organizational and nursing policies when appropriate.
    • Requires adequate hand/eye coordination and fine motor skills.
    • Talking and hearing is essential for communication.
    • Visual acuity is required to work with patients for observation, assessment, and electronic charting.
    • Current CPR certification from American Heart Association
    • Customer service abilities including effective listening skills
    • Ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment
    • Ability to perform work that requires walking, sitting and standing most of the time while on duty. Lifting and moving patients with assistance is required.
