    Description / Scope of Service
    The Telephone Triage is a 24 hour call center that provides medical advice to callers of all age, free of charge. The goal of the Telephone Triage is to direct the patient to the most appropriate level of care using doctor written protocols. Nursing staff provides callers with doctor approved education regarding disease processes and medication. Nursing staff help assist patients with scheduling clinic appointments and the establishment of primary care provider. The nursing staff utilizes the LVM software to access doctor written protocols. Nurses follow the algorithm of the protocol to determine the degree of care that is needed to assist the patient. They then guide the caller to the most appropriate location where they can best be treated or assist them with home care instructions. The ideal candidate must be able to demonstrate strong computer and communication skills. Strong multitasking skills are top priority. Floating to other units does not occur.

    Individualized Unit Specific Orientation
    • Unit specific orientation is provided in addition to UMC’s Hospital and Nursing Orientation.
    • During clinical orientation you will be paired with an experienced nurse preceptor.  Our nursing preceptors are specially trained and work as a team to obtain the best experience for the new employee
    • Orientation length is individually based and will be determined by the Preceptor, Employee and Clinical Instructor
    • The experienced nurse can expect one on one training with multiple preceptors to gain a better perspective of how staff navigate through the system.
    • Orientation will be individualized to meet the needs of the orientee.
    • Clinical orientation will begin on day shift to maximize the exposure to a higher call volume.  
    • Committee involvement is encouraged in order to improve patient care and processes Committees are available hospital wide 
    • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing
    • Must have 2 years recent Med-Surg experience
    • Valid Texas Nursing License or Compact Licensure  / Graduate Nurse Permit Required
    • Knows clinical and nursing standards and practices in according with the nursing scope and standards of practice as set forth by the American Nurses Association.
    • Provides professional nursing care to patients and provides supervision and guidance to the members of the nursing staff.
    • Age specific knowledge is required when needed for appropriate patient care.
    • Has working knowledge of organizational and nursing policies.
    • Requires adequate hand/eye coordination and fine motor skills.
    • Talking and hearing is essential for communication.
    • Visual acuity is required to work with patients for observation, assessment, and electronic charting.
    • Current CPR certification from American Heart Association
    • ACLS may be required based upon area of practice.
    • Customer service abilities including effective listening skills
    • Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment
    • Ability to perform work that requires walking, sitting and standing most of the time while on duty. Occasional lifting or patients with assistance is required.
