PART I - General Job / Performance Information

Education and Experience
High School Diploma
1-2 years of college preferred
Minimum 2 years of customer service
Excellent communication skills in spoken and written work, interpersonal, and conflict resolution
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions
Must have computer skills ( Personal Computer and Mainframe)

Environmental / Working Conditions
Works in a well-lighted, heated and ventilated building. Exposure to blood borne pathogens is of low risk. This position requires working in close proximity to other employees

Interaction with Other Departments and Other Relationships
Must respond in a helpful and considerate manner to the needs of patients, other health care facilities and physicians or other providers, and fellow employees. 
Provide superior customer service and service recovery, utilizing good judgement and independent thinking that meets or exceeds the expectations of physicians in both the local as well as the regional areas.   
Must be willing to work in an environment which encourages positive reinforcement by accepting, or sharing, constructive criticism appropriately.

Job Description
The primary purpose of the UMC Transfer Center Specialist is to facilitate all patient consult and transfer requests from regional outlying areas into the UMC hospital system through telephone coordination between the referring and accepting physicians, UMC House Supervisors, and Patient Placement Coordinators.   

Required Licensures / Certifications / Registrations
Certification by the American Heart Association as a Basic Cardiac Life Support Provider and current Texas Department of Health certification as an Emergency Medical Technician or Certified Medical Assistant is preferred. Background in medical terminology is required

Physical Capabilities
Most duties are performed in a sitting position.  Acuity of speech, vision, and hearing are essential to the successful completion of most duties.

Skills and Abilities
Must demonstrate the ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, recognize and react to changing priorities, make timely and accurate judgement decisions and maintain professionalism in stressful situations.
Must be able to handle multi-line phone system, tools and other resources in order to make appropriate contacts.
Must have knowledge of patients and their medical conditions/treatment options in order to select the appropriate physician/department for acceptance or consult.
Must be able to document and complete all transfer requests at the end of each shift, and relay pertinent information to all parties involved on any pending requests. 
  Must be able to work independently with little or no supervision.
